Lesson-Popliteal

14 – The common peroneal nerve

The common peroneal nerve branches off the sciatic nerve and runs along the biceps femoris muscle tendon

BFM = biceps femoris muscle

15 – The peroneal communicating nerve

The peroneal communicating nerve (also known as the sural communicating nerve) is a branch of the common peroneal nerve

It arises in the popliteal fossa and runs distally on the calf and joins the sural nerve in the subcutaneous fat

Image missing
The green colour depicts the peroneal communicating nerve

16 – The lateral cutaneous nerve of the calf

The lateral cutaneous nerve of calf (also known as the lateral sural nerve) is a cutaneous branch of the common peroneal nerve

It arises near the neck of the fibula and supplies the skin over the lateral aspects of the leg just distal to the knee

A popliteal sciatic nerve block also blocks the lateral cutaneous nerve of the calf

Image missing
The green colour depicts the lateral cutaneous nerve of the calf branching off the common peroneal nerve

7 – The medial calcaneal nerve branch of the tibial nerve

The medial calcaneal nerve is a branch of the tibial nerve

It arises postero-inferior to the medial malleolus

The medial calcaneal nerve branches innervates the skin of the heel

Image missing
The green colour depicts the medial calcaneal nerve branch of the tibial nerve

8 – Cutaneus innervation of the sole of the foot from the tibial nerve

The medial plantar nerve innervates the medial part of the sole of the foot

The lateral plantar nerve innervates the lateral part of the sole of the foot

The medial calcanean branch of the tibial nerve innervates the skin of the heel

Image missing
The sole of the foot is innervated by three branches of the tibial nerve: The medial plantar nerve (MPN), the lateral plantar nerve (LPN) and the medial calcaneal nerve (MCN)

10 – The sural nerve branches off the tibial nerve in the popliteal fossa

The sural nerve is a sensory branch of the tibial nerve

It arises within the popliteal fossa, runs distally between the two heads of gastrocnemius and pierces the deep fascia usually at the level of the upper calf

Here it is joined by the peroneal communicating nerve (a branch of the common peroneal nerve)

Image missing
The green colour depicts the sural nerve that branches off the tibial nerve

11 – The sural nerve – a branch from the tibial nerve

The sural nerve runs along the postero-lateral aspect of the leg, behind the lateral malleolus and along the lateral aspect of the foot

The sural nerve innervates the skin of the lower lateral calf, lateral border of the foot, and lateral side of the 5th toe

The green colour depicts the sural nerve

1 – Anatomy of the sciatic nerve

The sciatic nerve emerges from the pelvis through the greater sciatic foramen underneath the piriformis muscle

It descends in the midline of the thigh between the greater trochanter and the ischial tuberosity

Image missing
The yellow sciatic nerve (SN) emerges from the lower border of the triangular piriformis muscle
