Point­-of-­care ultrasound can determine the nature and volume of gastric contents when n.p.o. (nil per os) status is unknown or uncertain in the immediate perioperative or peri­anesthetic period.

As such, it may be a useful for anesthesiologists, emergency physicians or intensivists to evaluate aspiration risk prior to initiating sedation, anesthesia or airway management.
